[Review] Klavuu Vegan Zinc Suncream SPF50+ PA++++

Summer might be over, but sunscreen is still something you should be slathering on and reapplying religiously every day.

I’ve been enjoying my growing collection of chemical sunscreens but the truth is my heart belongs to the physical type. I have a huge fondness for mineral sunscreens but understand why many don’t. They are known for the dislikable, horrid white casts and thick textures that just sit atop skin, not to mention a lot of them are quite drying. However I assure you, while this formula might not be for everyone, it does not possess the characteristics I’ve mentioned. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Things to expect:

  • vegan formulation
  • mineral filter (17% Zinc Oxide)
  • skip-care sunscreen
  • flattering tone up effect
  • 10% Prunus Persica (Peach) Flower Extract
  • NO alcohol, mineral oil, paraben, or silicone

There were a number of reasons why I wanted to try this sunscreen. Firstly, it’s mineral. Secondly, the brand is completely new to me and I enjoy falling in love with brands I’m unfamiliar with. The other thing that caught my attention was the vegan formulation.

Full ingredient list: Water, Zinc Oxide, Cyclohexasiloxane, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Propanediol Solvent, Propylheptyl Caprylate, Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Isododecane, Caprylyl Methicone, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Magnesium Sulfate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, 1,2-Hexanediol, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Lauryl Polyglyceryl-3 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Fragrance, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Prunus Persica (Peach) Flower Extract, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Iron Oxides(CI 77492), Mica, Sodium Hyaluronate, Iron Oxides(CI 77491), Tocopherol, Iron Oxides(CI 77499), Butylene Glycol, Prunus Persica (Peach) Fruit Extract, Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract

As indicated by the name, this is a 100% vegan formula that is supported by up-cycled 10% Prunus Persica (Peach) Flower Extract from Cheongdo which provides hydration and soothing properties to irritated skin. The sunscreen only utilizes a single UV filter, Zinc Oxide, but it has the capacity to provide skin broad spectrum protection. The sunscreen is further supported by Tocopherol, Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract and Prunus Persica (Peach) Fruit Extract. This formulation does not include alcohol, mineral oil, parabens, or silicone.

I enjoy the texture of this sunscreen because its creamy and easy to spread and blend into skin. It does not dry quickly like certain mineral sunscreens therefore even if I take my time, I can evenly blend this into skin without any streaking. In fact, I find this one to be one of the easiest mineral formulas to work with. The creamy texture blends effortlessly over skin and does not latch onto my eyebrows or hair line which is something I often experience with physical sunscreens. It does not feel greasy, neither does it come off easily, therefore I do recommend double cleansing afterwards!

I’ve worn the formula under makeup numerous times and had no issues with the it pilling, or disturbing my makeup application. I even find it to be a perfect base for makeup. Initially this product’s moisturizing factor and pink tint reminded me of the Dr. Orga Premium Sun Protection Crème but it soon became apparent to me this was more oily-friendly in comparison.

The Vegan Zinc Suncream does not have an intense white cast. Let’s get that out of the way as I’m sure when people look up mineral sunscreens, one of the first things they’re most curious about is, how serious is the white cast. I consider this one to be on the lighter end of my experiences. If you have cool undertones, this one would likely flatter your skin tone as it does mine. Unfortunately, those with darker skin tones might not have the time to sit around to wait for this to adjust to their natural skin tone. I however assure you, much of it fades throughout the day.

For those with sensitive skin, I found the Vegan Zinc Suncream extremely gentle. It never broke me out or caused any discomfort to my eyes. There is however one qualm I have with this product which is the strong scent.

I would rate this the best mineral sunscreen that I’ve tried this year. I enjoy using this because it gives me a nice dose of moisturization which allows me to skip my morning moisturizer. It’s also nice that my oily skin doesn’t find this overly moisturizing as it doesn’t produce excess shine or sebum. Some physical sunscreens cause inner dryness which prompts overproduction of sebum to compensate however this one keeps my skin balanced.

The only thing that concerns me about this formula is the 17% Zinc Oxide inclusion which seems inadequate to provide skin the full protection it needs. According to experts, an amount of 20-25% Zinc Oxide is required for optimal protection.

The good:

  • great for oily skin
  • recommended as a skip-care sunscreen
  • tone up effect most flattering on cool skin tones
  • moisturizing but not greasy
  • creamy and easy to blend
  • no eye stinging/skin irritation
  • great as a daily SPF
  • good adherence to skin

The bad:

  • may not work on those with darker skin tones
  • strong fragrance
